Jiri to Everest base camp is a classic trekking trails with so much of important history to be connected with. It is one of those few trails which truly resemble the sheer beauty you get to see in your whole trek. This will be an ultimate thrill once you get on this trail.

 

Overview of Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek

Everest base camp via jiri is little long and difficult than that of normal trail but is exhilarating and full of adventure. Unlike lukla, Jiri is located in Dolaka district of Janakpur zone and is not a part of extensive Khumbu region. It roughly lies at an altitude of 1905m. it is accessible by roads and is 184 km north east of Kathmandu city. JIri to Everest base camp trek was the main trail before the construction of airport in Lukla. Infact this was the trail taken by the 1953 expedition that resulted in Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary being the first person on earth to summit Mt.Everest. At that time there were no roadways or hotels of any type in Kathmandu. The porters had to carry supplies for the expedition all the way from Kathmandu to Everest base camp. It was in those days that this trail was used crew member of all of the expedition that took place. Everest base camp via jiri have wonderful history to be connected including the first successful expedition of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary led by British Expedition in the year 1953. After the construction of Lukla Aiport it has become much convenient and faster in logistic terms.

Everest base camp via jiri is not often used by the trekkers these days, it has somewhat become an old fashioned trail. But for the true trekkers who wish to have lots of adventure and who enjoys hard and difficult trek is a perfect match. This trail is more difficult and longer than the normal route starting from Lukla. Instead of flying you will be driven to jiri from where you start your trek. This is the ultimate adventure for those thrill seekers who want to be at the top of the world. On your trail you will be familiarized with Lamas and Buddhists monks and monasteries which dominates this region. There is famous Rimdu festival celebrated in Tengboche, Chiwang and Thame and in some other parts of region but above three villages are the focal point of the festival. The festival generally falls in the month of October and November but has no fixed date over the period of years but instead fixed by careful observation and calculation of the Tibetan lunar calendar.

The trek to Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular trek routes in the world - a once in a lifetime adventure travel hike in the company of inspiring and breathtaking Himalayan scenery. Once you make it to the Base Camp, you are suddenly filled with a deep respect for the climbers who prove human determination and hardiness by making it to the mountain top.

There are two routes to Everest Base Camp trek: one that begins from Lukla and another that begins from Jiri. This Jiri to Everest base camp trekking itinerary has been designed in consultation with professional mountaineers and guides ensuring adequate time for proper acclimatization. While on the trek, we also pass through the alpine forests, glacial rivers, and enjoy the warm hospitality of ethnic people. Visit the Buddhist monasteries with prayer flags, the Sherpa and other ethnic villages with their simple yet rich mountain lifestyles. The views are gorgeous, and walking in the Himalayas proves to be quite an intense experience.

Our 21 days Jiri to Everest base camp trek is a great adventure trek for the travelers who are physically fit, in good health, and are determined to challenge themselves with unpredictability of mountain life.Spring(March to May) and Autumn (mid Sept to mid Dec) and are the best seasons for the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek. The weather during day is sunny and warm with outstanding views but nights are cold and can fall to freezing in higher elevations. Winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) is also good for Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, only issue is cold (obviously).

Day 01 Arrival in Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport)

You will be warmly greeted by our Staff member and then drop off to a Hotel. You will have a brief introductory speech by our guide about your trek. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02 drive to Jiri(1950m)

It will be like 8- 9 hours of drive from Kathmandu. Though it is only184KM northeast of Kathmandu. The drive going to take exceptionally long because of narrow roads and sharp turns. On reaching Jiri you will be spending the night at the lodge.

Day 03 Jiri to shivalaya(1760m)

Today your trek starts from a beautiful little town of Jiri to Shivalaya. It is a 5-6 hours trek and mostly downhill. Overnight at lodge.

Day 04 Shivalaya to Bhandar(2190m)

On your day four you will ascend for about 440m. On your trail you will come along with a beautiful countryside villages with low concentration of population and lots of vegetation. It is 4-5 hours of trek and you will arrive early in the afternoon. After some refreshment you can explore the village late in the afternoon. Overnight at lodge.

Day 05 Bhandar to Sete(2575m)

After an early and warm breakfast we trek downhill until you reach Likhu Khola. After crossing the river we go uphill to a small village of Kinja. On your way you come across excellent views of landscapes and its surroundings. Finally after 5-6 hours of trek you will reach a small Sherpa village called Sete where you will be spending the rest of the night.

Day 06 Sete to lamjura pass(3530m) to Junbesi(2680m)

Today you will trek for about 7-8 hours to Lamjura pass, the highest of all between Jiri and Namche Bazae, going through Mahabhart range and illustrious lush green forest. Overnight at lodge.

Day 07 Junbesi to Taksindu(2931m)

Today you will go further high to Taksindu. You can see the famous monastery of this region “Taksindu monastery”. Overnight at lodge.

Day 08 Taksindu to Kharikhola(2194m)

You start right after delicious and nutritious breakfast slowly going downhill where you will be accompanied by Dudh koshi river. After goin through several small Sherpa villages you will finally arrive in Kharikhola. Our crew member will book a lodge for you to spend the night.

Day 09 Kharikhola to Surkhe(2290m)

You slowly ascend along the trail on the north side of the valley to reach Puiyan village which will further lead you to Surkhe. The trek duration for today will be like 5-6 hours. You spend the night at lodge.

Day 10 Surkhe to Phakding(2610m)

Today you walk through the village of Chaurikharka during the autumn season you can see plenty of wheat and barley grown in and around of this village. The soil around here is fertile and gives villagers enough food to last for a year. Finally today your trail joins the trail from Lukla and all the way to Phkding where you will spend the night.

Day 11 Phakding to Namche Bazar(3440m)

After an early wakeup call from your guide you grab your backpack and walk along the Shore of Dudh Koshi River for quite some time and crossing it over couple of times. Slowly you will feel the raise in your breathing rate due to low oxygen level. At the end of the day you will arrive a beautiful legendary town of Namche Bazar to spend the night.

Day 12 Acclimatization day at Namche Bazar

It will be an important and crucial day for you before you move up further high. You should spend at least 24hours at this altitude to get yourself used to with even higher altitude. Your body adjusts to the low oxygen level, meanwhile you can go through this little downtown of khumbu region.

Day 13 Namche Bazar to Tengboche(3860m)

As you walk uphill with a magnificent view of Everest, Lhotse etc. not very far in the horizon. After a walk of 5-6 hours you reach a beautiful village of tengboche and the oldest and famous Monastery in the vicinity of village.

Day 14 Tengboche to Dingboche(4410m)

On day 14 you descend for about 1-2 hours until you reach Imja khola and cross it through the suspension bridge hung over the river. When you go further, you reach a small village of Pangboche(3900m) and futher high you go you reach Dingboche. Vegetation around this region is scarce. People here heavily rely on potatoes as their main source of food.

Day 15 Dingboche to Lobuche(4910m)

Today you trek along the trails of Dungla valley and reach Pheriche(4240m) where your trekking permits will be checked at the Trekkers Aid Check post. Your guide will be there to deal with this matter. You can also have a little health check up if you want or can continue the trek to Lobuche. You will be staying the night at the lodge.

Day 15 Lobuche to Gorakshep(5160m)

Now you can really feel the drop of oxygen level as you walk through the trails. It will be a short walk for about 3-4 hours. You reach Gorakshep early afternoon and can spend the afternoon at your will and get ready for the final destination of your intriguing trek.

Day 16 Gorakshep to EBC(5364m) and back to Pheriche(4210m)

Finally on your 16th day you reach the highest point of your trek EBC. You will be mesmerized by the view of Everest sitting right in front of you. You will stay there for a while and head straight back to Pheriche where you spend today’s night.

Day 17 Pheriche to Tengboche.

You descend the same trial you took just couple of days ago with some incredible memories with you as you come to the end of your wonderful journey. Your guide will arrange a lodge for you. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 18 Tengboche to Namche Bazar

Today you trek alongside Imja river with its enormous roar constantly hitting your ears. As you walk downhill you can see the greenery starts appearing in the distant view. You will stay overnight here at Namche.

Day 19 Namche Bazar to Lukla(2840m)

This will be the ending day of your long walk. You will, for the last time, trek down to Lukla crossing Dudh Koshi river on multiple occasions. Now you can feel your breathing rate slowly getting to normal as you descend. You will spend your night at the lodge in Lukla.

Day 20 Fly back to Kathmandu(1300m)

After an early breakfast you will get to the airport to catch a flight to Kathmandu. On your flight perhaps for the very last time you will see the beautiful view of Everest and its ranges. By afternoon you will be there at the hotel in Kathmandu with all luxuries included. You are free for all the afternoon, you can go for shopping and hang out in the coolest restaurants in the evening.

Day 21 Farewell day

This is the end of it. Our crew member will drop you off to the airport 3 hours prior to your scheduled departure time.
