Overview of Langtang Valley Trek

Langtang valley trek is a short and pleasant trek in the Langtang National Park which lies to the north of Kathmandu valley. Langtang valley is full of glaciers and is often referred as Valley of Glaciers because of abundance of glaciers found in this region. Besides its beautiful glaciers it has also wide varieties of climatic zones in a relatively small area with ample species of flora and fauna. This trail encapsulates the entire natural beauty of Himalayas, landscapes and glaciers in one single trek. The famous Langtang Lirung ranges, though not very high by the standards of other mountains found in Nepal, have its importance in its own way. The elevation of Langtang Lirung is roughly 7234m which is quite lower compared to many other peaks above eight thousands but is famous for its large vertical structure which makes almost impossible to explore it.

The most part of Langtang Valley trek falls in Langtang region with an exquisite taste of local culture of indigenous ethnic people living there. The pious and mesmerizing Gosaikunda lake and the historical marvel Kyanjin Gompa also falls within the tranquility of the region. Lots of Hindus and Buddhists followers come to this lake to perform different rituals as part of their devotion shown to this lake especially in the month of August. This region is also famous for Cheese production. Cheese is made from the pure yak milk which by many considered is the highest in quality. You will be served plenty of those during your stay in a local lodge.

The trees like Pine, Oak and maple are commonly found in Langtang national park and its vicinity. Animals like black bear, Himalayan thar, Rhesus monkey and musk dear can also be seen during this wonderful trek. For those who are interested in biological study, this trails is the perfect platform for their scientific research as it offers numerous types of eco-system prevailed in this region.

Almost all of the treks in Langtang region starts from the same point i.e. Syabrubesi which is just about 7 hours drive from Kathmandu valley. The trip starts from the lower region of the valley going through the numerous small villages, farmlands, vegetation, diverse eco-system, subtropical forest to the alpine climatic conditions.

Langtang valley trek begins with the drive along the Trisuli River north of Kathmandu, through Trasuli Bazaar; we reach to Dhunche and finally reach at Syabrubensi, a Sherpa village and farmlands of the people. Many villagers are originally from Tibet. Once this route was an important trading route with Tibet, therefore, most of the villagers and peoples here still are involved in trade. On the way of trekking, one can have a trek through Langtang National Park as it is located at the very edge of the Park. We also have chance to see some wild animals and birds. Among them are the monkeys, musk deer, Pika and the national bird of Nepal, the colorful Danphe. We continue our Trekking to Kyangjin Gompa (3,740 m), in between, we cross many rivers along a gorge and pass through oak and rhododendron forests and glacial moraine. After a overnight stay in Gompa, we visit the local yak cheese factory and have a view of the glaciers, which is also a gateway to Tibet and we return back to Syabru village and make a trip to Sing Gompa, a place where the holy lake Gosainkund is situated and we cross the Llaurebena Pass (4610m), and continue south leaving the Langtang region and reach at Helambu valley and subsequently at Chisapani and return back to Kathmandu.

The Langtang Valley is located only 90 km north of Kathmandu and is close to the border of Tibet. The valley is dominated by Langtang Lirung (7246m), the highest peak in the area. This is a superb introduction to trekking in Nepal among some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole country and fascinating unspoiled Sherpa villages.

You will trek through the magnificent forests of the Langtang Valley to the alpine meadows and yak pastures around Kyangjin Gompa. After an (optional) ascent of Kyangjin Ri (peak), where the 360 degree views of the Himalayan mountains are truly spectacular, you can retrace your route back down the valley to Syabru besi and then drive back to Kathmandu.
