Overview of Helambu Trek

Helambu is a beautiful highland region situated just about 80 kilometers north of Kathmandu valley. It is a short and easy trek for those who want to enjoy the beauty of trial in a convenient way. Helambu is a home to legendary Hyolmo people who are the indigenous people of Himalayan region and is recognized by Government of Nepal among 59 indigenous people of Nepal. Some of them have scattered as far as Bhutan and Sikkim and Darjeeling. They speak a specific language called Yolmo which is inherited largely from Tibetan and some of it from Mandarin. The genes of Hyolmo people can be traced back to Tibetan origin. It is believed that these people about two or three century ago migrated from the high Tibetan plateau towards Himalayan region of Nepal.

Despite being so close to the modernity of Kathmandu Helambu region is still primitive in many ways. Most of the parts of this region have been cut off from the luxuries and comforts of the modern world. The people of this region follow a typical Hyolmo culture which has been passed from one generation to another and is pretty amazing that they have been able to preserve and maintain the culture just like it was back in old days. The people living in Helambu region have very close ties with nature and its surroundings. In fact they have learned to adjust and live side by side with nature without disturbing any of the natural process. Environmentalists who advocate nature would be excited to learn the ways Hyolmo people have been doing all their life.

It is not the traditional culture and the life of the people that attracts tourists, Helambu is also rich in natural beauty. The green Rhododendron and Bamboo forest, tall standing Himalayas high waterfall are some of its major assets that make this place a perfect place for a visit. The best way to know the true color of the culture is to go there and experience it. Not just the culture you will get to know as you walk by past from one village to another you will see the meadows, waterfalls, glaciers, forests, mountains and pretty much everything you want to see.
