Makalu Expedition

Makalu is the fifth highest peak in the world elevating up to 8,463m./27,825ft. Its perfect pyramid shape structure with four ridges makes its appearance awe-inspiring. Mount Makalu is named "Cholembu" by the local Peoples. The first attempt to climb Mt. Makalu was made by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition led by Jean Franco on May 15, 1955. It is located in Nepal and China frontier in the Khumbu region of Eastern Nepal which is 20km away from Mount Everest. Makalu actually is not an unaccompanied peak. The secondary peak Chomo Lonzo (7,818 m) rising from the North is connected with a saddle to the main peak. The main route of the Makalu expedition is the South-East face. It is a solitary peak and has evidence of being challenging as five of the first sixteen attempts were only successful. Makalu Expedition can be concluded during the spring and autumn seasons.
